Flying with baby: the ultimate packing list

Flying with a Baby: The Ultimate Packing List for a Stress-Free Flight

Taking to the skies with your little one? Don't let packing stress you out! Whether it's a quick getaway to a sunny beach, a cross-country adventure, or a family visit, we've got you covered with our ultimate packing list for flying with a baby. As parents who've navigated our fair share of airports and airplanes with our daughter, Aria, from the time she was 3 months old, we're here to share our tried-and-true essentials for a smooth and enjoyable flight.

The Diaper Bag Essentials: Be Prepared for Anything

  • Diapers: Pack enough for the entire flight, plus a few extra in case of delays. Trust us, you don't want to run out mid-flight! Typically, diapers should be changed every 2-3 hours, so plan accordingly based on the length of your flight and time spent at the airport. If you're heading to a beach destination, don't forget to pack swim diapers for splashing fun. (Those don't need to be in your Diaper bag, but they are essential for a beach vacation!)
  • Wipes: Bring a pack for quick cleanups on the go. Sticky fingers, spills, and unexpected messes become part of the travel adventure with a baby.
  • Changing Pad: A portable changing pad is a must-have for diaper changes in the cramped airplane lavatory. Look for one that's easy to wipe clean and folds up compactly. Check out our own Tiny Explorers changing pad – it's waterproof, easy to clean, and comes with a built-in pocket for wipes, perfect for hassle-free diaper changes on your next adventure!
  • Diaper Cream: Long hours in a diaper can lead to irritation, so pack a small tube of diaper cream to keep your little one comfortable.
  • Disposable Bags: Don't underestimate the packing power of disposable bags! These little champions are your secret weapon for conquering any travel mess a baby throws your way. From containing dirty diapers and clothes to disposing of mid-flight trash, they'll be your secret weapon for a mess-free journey. We used these ones on our flight to Hawaii with Aria and they were a lifesaver.
  • Extra Clothes: Pack an extra outfit (or two) for both you and your baby in case of accidents. Trust me, spit-up happens!

Feeding Must-Haves: Hungry Babies Make for Grumpy Travelers

  • Bottles or Sippy Cups: Pack enough for the flight and any layovers. If you're formula feeding, consider bringing pre-portioned formula containers for convenience.
  • Formula or Breast Milk: If you're formula feeding, pre-measure the amount you'll need and bring extra just in case. Here too, it is good to take extra in case of flight delays or unplanned spills. If breastfeeding, consider a nursing cover for privacy if you prefer.
  • Bottles with Milk or Formula: Pre-filled bottles with milk or formula are a convenient way to feed your baby during the flight, especially during takeoff and landing. Don't worry about TSA restrictions; just inform them that you have baby milk or formula in your bag, and they will screen it separately.
  • Burp Cloths & Bibs: Protect your clothes (and the plane seat) from spit-up and spills. Bibs with crumb catchers are especially helpful.
  • Snacks: Puffs, teething biscuits, fruit packs, or other soft, easy-to-eat snacks can help keep your little one occupied and happy during the flight.

Comfort & Entertainment: Keep Them Busy

  • Favorite Blanket or Lovey: Familiar items provide comfort and security in a new environment. A lovey can be a lifesaver when your little one gets fussy.
  • Pacifiers: If your baby uses a pacifier, bring several just in case one gets lost or dirty. Sucking on a pacifier can also help with ear pressure during takeoff and landing. Pacifier covers are a great way to keep pacifiers clean and easily accessible, especially if your diaper bag doesn't have a designated pacifier pocket.
  • Toys & Books: Keep your little one engaged and entertained with a few favorite toys and books. A mix of familiar comforts and new discoveries can spark curiosity and keep them engaged. For a simple and captivating sensory activity, try a handful of colorful pompoms and an empty water bottle. It is Aria's favorite travel toy transferring the pompoms in and out of the bottle, developing fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Tips for Staying Organized: The Key to a Stress-Free Flight

  • Clear Packing Cubes: These are a lifesaver for keeping clothes, diapers, and other essentials organized. They also make it easy to find what you need quickly.
  • Ziplock Bags: Pack small items like creams, snacks, and medications in ziplock bags to keep them contained and prevent spills.
  • Wet Bag: A wet bag is perfect for storing soiled clothes and swimsuits, keeping them separate from clean items.
  • Backpack Diaper Bag: Choose a backpack diaper bag for easy carrying and hands-free convenience. Look for one with multiple compartments and insulated pockets for bottles. We've got a great one in stock!

Additional Tips for a Smooth Flight:

  • Book a Bulkhead Seat: These seats offer more legroom and space for a bassinet or baby carrier, making it easier to settle your little one.
  • Check-In Early: Arrive at the airport early to give yourself plenty of time for security and boarding. You may also be able to request a bulkhead seat at check-in if one is available.
  • Bring a Baby Carrier: A baby carrier is invaluable for navigating the airport, keeping your baby close during the flight, and soothing them if they get fussy.
  • Nurse or Bottle-Feed During Takeoff and Landing: The sucking motion can help relieve ear pressure in babies and prevent discomfort.
  • Be Prepared for Delays: Pack extra supplies, including diapers, wipes, formula/breast milk, and snacks, just in case your flight is delayed or canceled.
  • Get social: We've learned that sometimes the best way to soothe a fussy baby on a flight is to let them be the social butterfly they are! On one of our flights, Aria was having a meltdown, but as soon as we started walking down the aisle, she became mesmerized by all the new faces and started giggling and cooing at fellow passengers. It turned out to be a heartwarming experience for everyone involved.

With a little preparation and the right gear, you can make flying with a baby a (almost) breeze. Embrace the adventure, and remember to cherish those special moments with your tiny explorer!

Happy Travels!
